Episode I: Pleasant Company
America, 3rd decade of the 20th century. A young man rides the at the time modern Doge. It’s Clyde Griffith, late for a youth of the nobility meeting at a country villa. Even the romantic ideas of the sympathetic Sondra Finchley cannot distract from his stress. Meanwhile, Heath, who appears in the office of his boss, the prosecutor Maison Orville, introduces him to the disaster of the lake described in the newspapers (capsized boat, girl's body, no passenger found), persuading the boss to take the case, which could become a trump card in the autumn judge election. Orville agrees. Soon the two - and then a platoon of reporters - visit the home of the poor drowned girl's parents, Farmers Olden. At the same time, the youth are still lazily tanning, chatting and relaxing on the beach. But one of them, Clyde, sees unfamiliar men approaching on the boat, he quickly gets dressed and jumps into the woods. There the young man is arrested by the sheriff's assistant. Clyde is accused of killing Robert, a girl pregnant with his baby. The young man tries to deny everything, but gets confused, panicked for confrontation with the youth of the nobility, he is forced to give up and finds himself in a cell of suspects.
