Episode II: Illusions
The suspected Clyde Griffith sits in a detention unit. The young man remembers the joy of adolescence and youth in a family of preachers of fanatical parents in Kansas. For a nice, well-mannered guy, there are few prospects here. One of them is the work of a hotel messenger. Every cash coin for Clyde is a quite an event. Gradually, he enters the circle of his colleagues, inventive, even if poor, young people like him, and clumsy entertainments, he begins to interact with inaccessible girls, but the incident with a "borrowed" car, a foreign villa and an accident costing the company's most beloved boy Parker his freedom, forces Clyde to flee the city.
He finds himself in Chicago, where, on the recommendation of a former friend, he continues his career at a similar level - only in a company, not in a hotel. With affairs coming from New York State, a true uncle of Clyde, a wealthy liqueur city manufacturer, Samuel Griffith, arrives here. Clyde introduces himself to his uncle, leaving a pleasant impression on him. A new stage in Clyde’s career unfolds in Likurg. Mr. Samuel is reluctant to make life easier for a nephew who he has never seen before, and his cousin Gilbert treats Clyde discreetly, yet still as a stranger. The boy is offered to work in a haberdashery factory and reveal his abilities. He gets stuck in the basements of the factory for a long time, working hard physical work until Clyde finally gets promoted and becomes the head of the girls ’department for simple jobs.
