SCANORAMA joined the European Film Festival Network

In 2017 SCANORAMA, together with six other European film festivals, initiated the network “Moving Images – Open Borders”. All seven festivals are wholly devoted to European cinema with all its artistic facets, regional characteristics, and socio-political warps. At the program level the partner festivals are united by a focus on new voices and young talents of European cinema, who can familiarize themselves with the mechanisms of festival operations within the framework of the festivals and expand their contacts with the international film industry.

An ongoing exchange among the partner festivals is to be catalyzed in 2018, and in keeping with the idea of European networking, a Best Practice model is to be developed. Plans include intensifying the promotion of European filmmaking, joint marketing activities, and informal meetings with the goal of achieving immediate and lasting measures within the European festival landscape.

“Moving Images – Open Borders” is intended to be an informal network that is devoted 100 percent to creative filmmaking and Europe, and which provides all participating partner festivals with an opportunity to profit from exchanging experiences in terms of organization and program on a long-term basis. 

International Film Journalism Lab at European Film Festivals

Scanorama, together with a network of European film festivals, invites Lithuanian journalists to participate in international film journalism labs taking place in Austria, Serbia, Germany, and Lithuania.

About the Program

In response to the rapidly evolving landscape of film journalism, the MIOB network aims to amplify the voices of a new generation of critics and film journalists—writers who bring a unique perspective, a fresh tone, and contemporary writing styles to the public discourse.

Selected participants are offered an exclusive, free professional opportunity: one-on-one mentorship with experienced cultural journalism experts and hands-on work at major European film festivals. This is a chance not only to observe the inner workings of the film world up close but also to provide critical insight into them.

In collaboration with the international film platform Cineuropa, the young journalists will produce film reviews, analytical articles, and reports. The best piece, selected by a panel of judges, will be published on the platform—serving as a testament to the author's professional growth and creative potential.

Internal Network Training: Hospitality and Partnerships

Scanorama will organize internal network training sessions focused on hospitality, partnerships, and sales.

This network-initiated team training offers significant professional benefits. It enhances the international experience of colleagues by involving them in a collaborative transnational process and expands professional connections with European festivals of a similar scale and focus.

This targeted model of knowledge and practice exchange not only boosts the team's competencies but also ensures the organization's consistent growth within an international context.

Sustainability Commitments and the "Green Charter"

Every network member is committed to adhering to the principles of the "Green Charter." This entails the systematic application of data collection tools and methodologies, ensuring that data regarding consumption and environmental impact is entered into the platform and analyzed on an annual basis.

For the 2024–2026 period, network members are supported by a sustainability consultant. This assistance is part of a broader process of professionalizing the network's activities, involving external experts who help structure our commitments more clearly and maximize their impact.

The specialist’s work—which includes festival site visits, an analysis of the challenges involved, and an evaluation of data from the "Green Charter" platform and forum—provides the expert foundation needed to better understand the festivals' actual needs, commitments, and areas for improvement. This systematic mapping of the situation enables the formulation of clear guidelines, the definition of goals, and the development of potential certification or labeling principles.

MIOB Code of Conduct

As a member of the international film festival network MIOB (Moving Images Open Borders), the Scanorama European Film Festival adheres to the principles of the shared Code of Conduct, which aims to foster a safe, respectful, inclusive, and professional working and festival environment.

The Code emphasizes:

• respect and equality for all community members,

• zero tolerance for discrimination, harassment, and aggressive behavior,

• responsible and empathetic communication,

• cooperation, reliability, and confidentiality.
