Episode IV: The Trial
Elvin Belnep, a young lawyer, appears in Clyde’s cell. They and their older colleague Jephson decided to take the young man’s defence. The accused still lives on with memories of his relationship with the beloved Roberta, and dreams of a marriage to Sondra, which seemed like the pinnacle of his dreams. Clyde has not forgotten the accidental newspaper message about the tragedy in the lake, which led him to commit a crime as well. He also remembers his hesitations, night reflections before taking the fateful step. Lawyers, meanwhile, soberly appreciate Clyde’s naivety, lack of experience, and try to instil in his client the principles of his defence. Dramatic court days are approaching. The hall encounters spears of legal mastery, ingenuity, cynicism, and Clyde looks like an outside observer here. He snaps. While the boy is cutting his hair before the death sentence is executed, two defenders and two prosecutors play the bridge amicably in the club room.
