Submarino

The title of the film is a reference to a certain method of torture, called "submarine", in which the victim's head is immersed in water and held until a person is almost drunk.

Nick and his younger brother grew up in appalling conditions: poverty, exploitation, and an alcoholic mother. Now Niki is 33 and has just been released from prison. He knows what he wants: to train as much as possible and to drink as much as possible in order to lift the misfortunes of this world. His younger brother is a drug addict and a single father. He cares only for two things in life: the daily dose and the well-being of his six-year-old son Martin. That is why he trades in drugs. The brothers live their lives, but together they seem to be looking for each other in bustling Copenhagen. They are united by a common desire for a better future. Sometimes their knees meet, but in reality they only meet for the first time in prison. Just not too late ...

"It's a film about two brothers and their attempts to stand firm, free themselves from the fate imposed on them by their mother and society," says Thomas Vinterberg.
