Isak and Inger were among the first to come to northern Norway. They work hard and hard. Immediately instead of a slum, they build a real house, buy livestock, and start raising children. Unfortunately, one of them is born with a cleft lip and the mother who killed him goes to jail. Over the years, the society outside the prison walls is changing - a copper mine is being built, more and more settlers are coming. Isaac does not stop farming, other immigrants are forced to do the same when there are no more minerals in the mine.
The film is based on a novel of the same name by Knut Hamsun.
