19th century end, the capital of Norway, Christiania. Young writer Pontus is starving and wandering the streets of the city, hoping to publish his work. He is unsuccessfully looking for a job to pay for a roof over his head and feed himself. Hunger and constant defeats push Pontus towards madness, he gradually loses his sense of reality.
