After her estranged mother’s death, Mar is determined to sever ties with Malta once and for all. Having inherited several plots of land, she hopes to sell them as quickly as possible, before her relatives can contest her claim. Her unlikely guide in locating them is Nenu, an itinerant singer of għana, Malta’s traditional folk music. Their unexpected friendship and the island’s folklore gradually soften Mar’s bitterness towards her homeland, allowing her to reimagine what home might mean. Winner of Best Screenplay in the International Narrative Competition at Tribeca, Żejtune offers a moving reflection on reconnection and the importance of preserving a country’s history and distinctive musical traditions.
