Summer in Geneva. Johanna works on the assembly line at a luxury watch factory and has no plans to go away. Though initially considering getting rid of her rusty Volkswagen, she eventually decides to give the old Beetle a new lease of life. Like a contemporary Mad Max heroine, Johanna ventures into the male-dominated world of engines and metal that once rejected her. Shot on 16 mm and moving between documentary and autofiction, Summer Drift explores working-class life in Switzerland and the struggle to reclaim one’s identity.
