Pristina, Kosovo, in the late 1990s. As war looms and ethnic tensions escalate, thirteen-year-old Dua struggles to find her place among her peers. After a tragic event shakes her community, she befriends the fearless Maki, who introduces her to unexpected forms of resistance. Amid the brutality of daily life and the growing threat of exile, Dua carves out a small space in which to discover herself. This tender coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of war premiered in Cannes Critics’ Week. “When you make a film about small countries like Kosovo, there is always a temptation to explain, because the history is so complex. There are two peoples and two languages, yet few outsiders can tell them apart or know what really happened. They know only that there was a war,” says director Blerta Basholli.
