Prisoner R is taken to the toughest prison in Denmark. The number left by his name, the letter, he is just another prisoner. Prison is a world of rules, honor and debt. A world where gratings cover windows and blood on the ground. R is placed in the scariest compartment. Here he has to adapt to a ruthless system, learn to maneuver and fight to survive.
“We didn’t want to make another film about prison. We didn’t want to portray the prisoners as if they were heroes, we tried to avoid clichés of this genre and tell as realistically as possible what was going on outside those walls. There is a rule in prison - one door must be closed before it can be opened. We have applied this system in the film as well, it dictates the rhythm of the narrative. The simple method is that the scene changes the scene, some doors close, others open, and this allows us to look at the essence of life in prison, ”said directors Michael Noer and Tobias Lindholm about the film.
