"People are like clouds - you never know when they will come together and when they will break up ..." The Grandhotel is a place between heaven and earth. This is where Vlasta Fleischman, the guardian and prisoner of this place, a caretaker and an amateur meteorologist who wants to get as close to the sky as possible, lives here. But he has already reached the limit, so only birds and fools can rise higher, and Fleischman longs to be a bird. It's a film about people "between the clouds."
