Ingeborg and Adam are a successful couple and pioneering hand surgeons, bound by a shared fascination with control, objects and each other. After Ingeborg’s kleptomania causes an accident, she comes to rely on a custom-made crutch and on Gaia, a former patient with a mysterious affinity for the natural world. Gaia’s arrival sends Ingeborg’s obsessions and desires in ever stranger, more sensual directions, while Adam searches for an object through which to fulfil his own fantasies. As the world edges towards ecological collapse, the couple’s meticulously ordered existence begins to break down, and bodies, objects and fungi become mysteriously intertwined. Blurring the boundaries between human beings, other forms of life and objects laden with human meaning, this surreal film explores desire and ecological anxiety.
