The 19th Century Georgian Chronicle

In the 19th century, student Niko returns to his native Georgia from St. Petersburg. There he clashes with Tsarist officials while fighting to preserve a forest where his ancestors are buried. In a process steeped in bureaucratic absurdity, he discovers that the forest’s fate depends on a single signature. With only four feature films to his name, Rekhviashvili uses poetic and minimalist means to portray a story of resistance and the contrasting worlds of city and countryside.

Aleqsandre Rekhviashvili

Aleqsandre Rekhviashvili (1938–2020) was a renowned, award-winning Georgian film director, cinematographer, and screenwriter whose career began in the early 1960s. He first gained recognition as the cinematographer of Alaverdoba (1962) and Pirosmani (1969), later directing major feature films including The Green Meadow (1974), The 19th Century Georgian Chronicle (1979), and The Step (1986). In his later years, Rekhviashvili focused on documentary filmmaking, completing his final work, Resurrecting the Past (2019), after 17 years of production.
