“Dear Phil, I can’t continue working, MOS! - SOS - Come to Lisbon with all your stuff as soon as possible! Hug, Fritz. MOS is an old and rather strange word to describe silently. The saying came from the 1930s and means "mit-out sound." It soon becomes clear that the postcard with this text was sent by the filmmaker Friedrich Monroe, who was making the film in Lisbon, to the sound engineer Philip Winter (the same Philip from the film Alice in the Cities). He comes to the Portuguese capital and sets out to explore the city. Philip is not interested in architectural celebrities, he is attracted by acoustic landscapes, he is looking for the sound of the city.
"The story of the film is only an instrument, a pretext and a reason to tell about Lisbon. This city is revealed in the band not only by images but also by sounds. The image does not seek to obscure the sound, on the contrary, they "coexist" peacefully and each complements the story being told in its own way. For Wenders, sound has as much power to convey the world as image, ”wrote film critic Alexander Graf about the history of Lisbon.
