A town in south-eastern Ukraine is under Russian occupation. The church of Andriy, a 35-year-old Ukrainian priest, has been turned into a morgue. He is forced to guard the bodies of executed Ukrainian civilians until Russian forces arrive to collect them. Every three weeks, the bodies are taken away and buried in mass graves to conceal the occupiers’ crimes. For months, Andriy quietly resists, secretly returning the bodies to their families. But winter is closing in, and the ground is now too frozen to bury the dead. How long can he continue to resist? Must he abandon his calling - or risk being killed? The film by Lithuanian-born director of Ukrainian heritage Rostislav Kirpičenko screened in the Special Screenings section at Cannes.
