1898, Finland. Amanda suffers from a rare and severe premenstrual disorder, but those around her consider her condition to be hysteria. She is sent to a psychiatric hospital on the remote island of Seili, where not only women who have committed crimes but also women who fail to conform to society’s standards are confined. Amanda’s rebellious nature drives her to fight for herself and her rights. This historical drama, presented at the Göteborg Film Festival, explores the history of women’s mental health. Institutional brutality and an oppressive patriarchal society are contrasted with female friendship and solidarity, as well as love that blossoms even under the most unfavorable circumstances.
