Scarecrows is an airport western whose protagonists are the “runway rangers”, bird and wildlife control specialists working at Riga Airport. Led by Mareks, the four-person team works each day to keep flights safe, negotiating the boundary between technological order and the unpredictability of nature. The airport’s urban landscape is ringed by forests, reed beds and waterways, and populated by birds, roe deer, hares, cats, raccoons, beavers and foxes. Each creature follows its own path, with potentially dangerous consequences for air traffic. The documentary reveals the unseen world behind every take-off at Riga Airport, reminding us that boundaries ultimately mean something only to humans. Scarecrows had its world premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.
