Daro, a young Syrian woman, falls in love with Toke, a Danish student on exchange at Damascus University. Bowing to her family’s demands, however, she agrees to marry a Syrian man. The forced union becomes violent, but Daro manages to escape the nightmare and begin a new life in Denmark. There she builds a safe home with the man she loves, only to return to the region when civil war breaks out in Syria, travelling to Lebanon and Greece to help refugees. Drawing on footage recorded over twenty years, the film charts a turbulent chapter in the history of the Middle East and the director’s efforts to use the camera to heal the wounds of her traumatic past. “Filming has always been a therapeutic tool for me,” says director Daro Hansen.
