In the vast white landscapes of Sápmi, at the northern edge of Scandinavia, the horizon all but disappears. The Sámi have lived here for generations, with reindeer herding central to their culture and way of life. When plans are announced for a copper mine on their ancestral lands, both the community’s future and the survival of its herds come under threat. Maia joins the protests and turns to her uncle Lemme, a charismatic lawyer, for help. But his return reopens a long-buried family trauma. Steeped in Sámi dance and joik, Árru is a family drama confronting urgent questions of cultural survival. Above all, director and choreographer Elle Sofe Sara invites audiences to spend time with one of Europe’s oldest Indigenous peoples.
