Kata is a factory worker in her early forties. Lonely and unfulfilled, she wants to have a child with her married lover, but he refuses to make such a commitment. Meanwhile, Anna, a teenager raised in state care, asks Kata to take her in. A bond of genuine trust develops between the two women. Anna’s longing for a mother and her determination to claim her independence lead Kata to recognise the changes she must make in her own life. She decides to help Anna leave the institution and marry the boy she loves. Their relationship reflects the social and political forces shaping women’s experiences of love, marriage and motherhood. With Adoption, presented at the 1975 Berlinale, Márta Mészáros became the first woman director to win the Golden Bear.
