Fabrice Aragno, cinematographer of Jean-Luc Godard’s later films, presented his feature debut The Lake at the Locarno Film Festival. The film follows a couple competing in a five-day sailing race across vast Lake Geneva – a body of water once captured on film by masters such as Godard, the Straubs, and Tanner. Rejecting linear storytelling, Aragno instead crafts a landscape film, immersing the viewer in shifting shades and textures of water and sky, and revealing on screen the awe-inspiring, untamed force of nature.
