During the Cold War, farmer Karl Göran Persson, alarmed by the Swedish government’s warnings of a possible Soviet attack, begins building a bunker at home to protect himself from the approaching enemy. As he reinforces the walls with scrap metal, the house gradually turns into a strange sculpture, while his attempts to safeguard other villagers earn him only ridicule. The Fortress is the cinematic continuation of Swedish artist Jonas Skoog’s award-winning video installation. The feature debut centers on a real 19th-century farmer obsessed with war paranoia, portrayed by the French cinema star Denis Lavant.
