Pre-war Kaunas. The main character, Adam, is a handsome young man with a beautiful girlfriend, Lucy. However, he is poor, with no job and no shelter. Adam takes refuge in an old barge with the strange Captain, played by the legendary Lithuanian theatre director Juozas Miltinis. Adam and Lucy dream of going to a distant, exotic American country, where their deprived existence would end and their fantasies of a beautiful life would come true. Adam finally manages to get a job in an emigration office and starts saving money for a ticket to Buenos Aires, but his dreams are unlikely to come true.
