A man taking a steamer ship to a remote island. The inhabitants are curious about the newcomer as he gets to know the innkeeper, the village idiot, and a pretty local girl. He starts a relationship with the girl after escaping death at the hands of the colony founder and together with the idiot manages to find gold, but the islanders turn their wrath on the man. He runs away after killing the girl's boyfriend in a fight. These people of the island have their own system of justice, however, and seek to punish the intruder in this symbolic drama of social conflict.
