The twists and turns of the life of Damutė Gaižauskienė, a woman from Aukštaitija, are familiar to
most Lithuanians. She spent the best part of her youth in exile in Siberia, her motherland has been
devoured, and painful memories accompany her throughout her life. She finds relief in bell-tolling
and her horse Miražas, both making up an integral part of her existence.
