Immediately banned in the director’s Communist Poland for over a decade and a half, The Devil tells a story of a young Polish nobleman Jakub (by Leszek Teleszynski), saved from imprisonment by a stranger during the Prussian army's invasion in 1793. Following his mysterious saviour across the country, Jakub is shocked by the overall chaos and moral corruption of his native country. Slowly descending into insanity, the nobleman is manipulated into a Hamlet-like revenge on just about everyone in sight.
