In August 1991 a failed coup d’état attempt (known as Putsch) led by a group of communists in Moscow, ended the 70-year-long rule of the Soviets. The USSR collapsed soon after. In the city of Leningrad thousands of people poured into the streets to become a part of the event that was supposed to change their destiny. Now Sergei Loznitsa revisits the dramatic moments of August 1991 and casts an eye on the event which was hailed worldwide as the birth of “Russian democracy”.

Sergei Loznitsa

Sergei Loznitsa was born in Belarus in 1964. Later Loznitsa family moved to Kiev, Ukraine, where he finished high school and Math studies. He worked as a scientist in the Institute of Cybernetics and also as a translator from the Japanese. In 1997 he graduated from the Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), where he studied Feature Filmmaking. Loznitsa has been making documentary films since 1996, and has directed 13 award-winning documentaries, such as Settlement (2001), Landscape (2003), Blockade (2005), The Revue (2008). Director’s feature debut My Joy (2010) premiered in the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival. His second feature film In the Fog was screened in the competition of the 65th Cannes Film Festival in 2012, and awarded with the FIPRESCI prize. In 2014 his documentary Maidan was screened in Scanorama.
