A film about people who have lost the ability to love – and be loved. Konraad, 83, has told his relatives that he wants to die. Maria, his only child, refuses to discuss this wish. Her two grown-up daughters Sabine and Eva have problems of their own: Sabine has a troubled marriage while Eva is in therapy, recovering from an abortion. Maria’s husband, Ernst, is the only one who takes an interest in Konraad’s plight. In so doing he angers his wife and widens the rift between them. Konraad’s offspring are all trapped in their own worlds and when they take a closer look at themselves they realise there is little that holds the family together. They have all come to a dead end. Something must change. “I don’t want to moralize. The camera will not judge. It will keep a certain distance, allowing time for reflection. By arranging scenes in a meaningful way, I want to concentrate on my characters’ actions and let them speak for themselves. I believe in telling a story through small, practical details,” says director Nanouk Leopold.
