Laila Pakalniņa was born in Liepaja, Latvia, in 1962, and graduated in 1986 from the Department of TV Journalism of the Moscow University as well as in 1991 from the Department of Film Direction of the Moscow Film Institute (VGIK). Her award-winning work includes various short films, documentaries and feature films.
