Babette’s Feast

19th century, Denmark. The two adult sisters live in a small isolated village with their father, a revered priest of a local, sect-like Protestant church. Although both sisters have the opportunity to leave, they choose to stay with their father to serve him and the Church. A few years later, a refugee from France named Babete arrives. She begs to be accepted, and for that she promises to tidy the house and cook. After a while, the father dies. The sisters decide to commemorate his 100th birthday. Babette sees great potential here and begs the sisters to let her be in charge of cooking for the whole celebration. The sisters, though admitted (what can Babete, a Catholic from abroad, do?), Agree.

Babete's Feast won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1988.
