The sleepy life of the coal-mining town of Dogville, plagued by the economic crisis of the 1930s, is disrupted by the dramatic arrival of a young outsider. The beautiful Grace is hiding from the gangsters. The first person she met, Tom Hanson, extends a helping hand to her. Because Tom is the local moral authority, those around him allow Greice to stay here for a while. True, for that she has to work. When it turns out that Grace is looking for the police, the locals demand compensation from her for the constant risk. Grace tries to escape, realizing what is supposed to be the stickiness and integrity of these godly people. None of them wonder why Grace is forced to hide.
