SCANORAMA competition programme expands, registration has begun

European Film Forum SCANORAMA has now opened the registration for the short film competition New Baltic Cinema. This year, cinema makers from all the Baltic Sea region countries are welcome to participate.

From 2008 to 2018 the New Baltic Cinema competition was open for submissions only from directors of the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania). However, since our international partnerships within the area of non-commercial cinema have grown stronger, we have decided to open up our walls and expand the geography of the festival.

“European cinema community is uniting, and it is the main condition for the cinema to grow and flourish. That is why we have decided to enter a new stage, and, as of this year, the Baltic Countries short film programme becomes the International Competition of the Baltic Region. The competition programme will welcome cinema makers from Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Poland, and Russia. The changes will help strengthen the programme content, encourage new partnerships between the countries, as well as add more colours of the European cinema to it”, – the creative director and founder of the festival Gražina Arlickaitė explained.

Last year, the winner of the New Baltic Cinema Competition was Nanuli and Gogi by Miriam Agladze, produced by the Estonian production company. The best Lithuanian short film award – second year in a row – went to Klaudija Matvejevaitė and her film When You Cross the River. The films of the competition are considered and evaluated by the international jury. In 2018, the jury consisted of Icelandic Film Center director Laufey Guðjónsdóttir, German Film Academy member Katja Hevemeyer and French film maker and philosopher Jean Breschand, who, in 2017, successfully presented his debut film Pope Joan in SCANORAMA festival.

Registration for this year’s SCANORAMA competition is open until the 1st of August. The submitted films must have been created no earlier than September 1st, 2017, and they must not have been shown previously in any cinema or any other Lithuanian festival. The best films of the competition will be awarded prize money. All the conditions and regulations of the competition, as well as the registration form, can be found here.

The European Cinema Forum SCANORAMA will take place on 7–24th of November 2019, in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and Šiauliai.
