Shaban and his wife Hatixhe run a small cattle farm in rural Kosovo. After a family dispute costs them their herd, their main source of income, they move to Pristina with their daughters in search of work. When Hatixhe’s family offers them jobs cleaning a nightclub, Shaban accepts, but the help brings him more humiliation than relief. The poorly paid work takes its toll, while adapting to a new life governed by the rules of capitalism becomes increasingly unbearable. Shame and Money offers a humane portrait of working life in contemporary Kosovo, asking whether dignity can be preserved in today’s market economy. The film won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic at the Sundance Film Festival and has since screened at numerous international festivals.
