Hans Alfredson’s film blends absurdist comedy with social satire, allowing everyday reality to tip into the grotesque and the darkly comic. It follows an eccentric family whose fortune rests on a lucrative but environmentally destructive factory producing implements from eggshells. When the tyrannical patriarch throws his son out of the family home following a misunderstanding, the young man seeks refuge in the wilderness. He eventually returns, determined to rebel against his father’s empire. The film unfolds as a fragmented narrative filled with unexpected situations and eccentric characters, exposing the absurdities of bureaucracy and power, as well as the ordinary individual’s helplessness in the face of both. Alfredson uses irony and a playful approach to reveal the illogical workings of society, deliberately dismantling conventional narrative logic along the way. Here, plot takes second place to atmosphere and a sharply critical view of modern life.
