In a small coastal town, Asle and Gerda fall in love and have a son. But their life together is overshadowed by hardship: Asle is irresistibly drawn to the sea, while Gerda is increasingly left alone with their boy. The love between two people, balanced between desire and responsibility, dreams and reality, gradually gives way to distance. The interplay of silence and the film’s visual language, with troubled gazes set against the majestic Norwegian landscape, becomes the director’s way of exploring the subtle shifts in a relationship that are difficult to put into words. Beloved is a mature screenplay written back in 1988 by Poppe’s longtime friend, screenwriter and Nobel Prize laureate Jon Fosse, which has waited almost 40 years for its cinematic interpretation.
