When Amanda finds her stepfather Martin having sex with her mother, Leslie, she is convinced that Leslie’s dementia has left her unable to consent. But who, in such circumstances, has the right to make decisions on a woman’s behalf? And who should be entrusted with the care of someone with dementia - their child, their partner or an institution? The involvement of social services ignites a moral conflict between Amanda, played with quiet intensity by Juliette Binoche, and Martin, as the line between care and control becomes increasingly difficult to draw. A painful, nuanced and clear-eyed drama about intimacy and ageing, Queen at Sea won the Silver Bear Jury Prize at the Berlinale.
