Seventeenth-century Germany. A mysterious soldier with a scarred face arrives in a remote Protestant village. He produces papers naming him as the heir to a long-abandoned farm and settles there despite the villagers’ suspicions. Gradually, his piety, courage and hard work earn their trust. But acceptance comes with expectations: the villagers now want him to marry and have children. Rose, however, is guarding a secret - she is a woman living as a man. Dramatic yet laced with dark irony, Schleinzer’s film is an ode to women throughout humanity’s patriarchal history - a history steeped in blood and silence. Sandra Hüller won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at the Berlinale for her remarkable portrayal of Rose.
