Eitvydas Doškus’s films: Next Stop – Paneriai premiere and This Was Vilnius Meet in a single program

View schedule

The latest film by acclaimed cinematographer and director Eitvydas Doškus, Next Stop – Paneriai (premiere), and his award-winning work This Was Vilnius, which received the Silver Crane Award and was named Best Short Film, will be presented together in a single program, creating a kind of dialogue between time and space.

The two films are connected by Eitvydas Doškus’s distinctive portrait of Vilnius – a sensitive gaze at places that change, disappear, endure, and acquire new meanings.

In This Was Vilnius, the camera captures a changing city, its architecture, people, and fragments of everyday life. Some of the places documented in the film no longer exist, turning the film into not only a portrait of the city but also a testimony to the passage of time. Inspired by Almantas Grikevičius’s now-classic film Time Passes Through the City, Doškus’s work builds a bridge through time between different generations and different versions of Vilnius.

Next Stop – Paneriai extends this exploration of the city beyond the center of Vilnius. A train pulls into snow-covered Paneriai, and the camera enters a place where layers of the past intertwine with the present and with changes yet to come. The film journeys through the Paneriai Memorial, the old railway tunnel, houses gradually disappearing amid the surrounding forest, and places where a new railway route is already being laid out. Among these different traces of time, children also appear – reminding us that Paneriai belongs not only to what has been, but also to what is yet to come.

Together, the two films create a continuous journey through the memory of the city: from Vilnius to Paneriai, from the past to the future, from what has already disappeared to what is starting to change.

The films will be accompanied live by music performed by composers Paulius Kilbauskas and Vygintas Kisevičius. The music will become an integral part of the cinematic experience, extending the atmosphere created on screen and allowing us to experience the landscapes of Vilnius and Paneriai not only through sight, but also through sound.
