Following the international triumph of his majestic epic Godland, Hlynur Pálmason returned to Cannes with The Love That Remains, a tender and surreal portrait of a family in dissolution. Magnus no longer shares a household with Ana, but he still comes back to the family home to visit their three children – twin boys and a daughter (played by the director's children). Together they play basketball, wander through the hills, gather berries, and forage for mushrooms. Time reveals itself only in the rust traces seared into Ana’s canvases and in the shifting seasons of the Icelandic landscape. Is this reality, or merely the dream of a lonely man yearning for love?
