The film depicts the last and happiest period of Franz Kafka's life. He is a writer of great talent, but one with a complicated personality, a self-doubting writer who has not yet experienced intimacy or learned to live independently. In 1923, while recovering from tuberculosis by the Baltic Sea, he falls in love with Dora Diamant. The couple settle in Berlin, but as Franz's health inexorably deteriorates, they move to an Austrian sanatorium. Franz dies a year later, but the time they spent together changes Dora's life forever.
