The winter of 1862. At the height of the Civil War, the American army sends a detachment of volunteers west to patrol unmarked areas. When the purpose of their mission is changed, the volunteers begin to question the meaning of their commitment. The improvised conversations between non-professional actors, which capture the everyday life and poor ideals of the military, also reflect the current tensions in the country. Italian director Roberto Minervini's first feature film won the award for Best Director at Cannes for A Different Look.
