In post-war, Francoist Andalusia, a teenage mother Antonia lives in a closely-knit, destitute rural community. There is no room for dissent and rebellion and perhaps precisely for that reason, one night Antonia simply vanishes, leaving behind her baby. Fast forward five decades, we meet Carmen, who works as a casting director has to find a "normal" person for a political campaign. During this search she meets a street vendor with whom she shares much more than meets the eye. Gently subversive and achingly realistic, The Permanent Picture investigates the impermanence of time, sentiments, and the complex relation between the image and the subject.
