In Focus – Ukraine. Ukraine’s Film Industry Reinvention during the War

Nataliia Serebriakova will present the challenges the Ukrainian film industry is facing today. The critic will share unique stories about film projects that had to be completed and were entirely filmed during the war, including actual examples of the films that were affected. Serebriakova will also highlight the complexities of finding funding during the war and filming in front-line zones, examine how the themes of Ukrainian films changed and unveil some of the film scripts that are currently written. This event is a unique opportunity to directly experience the power and resilience of cinema and get first-hand knowledge about the Ukrainian film industry processes of historical importance.
Nataliia Serebriakova, the Ukrainian film critic, writes for “Cineuropa,” Delfi.lv, the online critical magazine “Korydor” and “Scanorama”. Since 2018, she is a curator of the international film festival “Kyiv Critics Week” and a member of the Union of Ukrainian Film Critics. Serebriakova is also taking part in the activities of the French art history research institute Institute National d`Historie de l`Art in the field of film criticism and is a programmer of the retrospective "Slava Ukraїni!" at La Cinematheque Francaise. Since 2022, she has contributed to film programming for the European Film Forum Scanorama. Since 2023, Nataliia has been a Golden Globes voting group member.
