Contemporary Ukrainian Cinema – Anthology of a Decade
A glance at the modern Ukrainian film processes of the last decade of the XXIst century through the eyes of a Ukrainian film critic Natalia Serebriakova. Directors and their films. Actors and their work. Awards and participation in prestigious festivals. From personalities to ideas. Anthology of the last decade of contemporary Ukrainian cinema is aimed to help us breathe the same air and understand Ukrainian visual culture better.
During the masterclass Ukrainian film critic will present the clips and stills of the films, which she highlights in contemporary Ukrainian filmmaking of the last decade.
The masterclass will be concluded by an interview with Maksym Nakonechnyi, the director of “Butterfly Vision” (2022), presented in this year's European Film Forum “Scanorama” program and its editor Alina Gorlova. The film was nominated for Golden Camera and Un Certain Regard awards at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Natalia Serebriakova, the Ukrainian film critic, writes for “Cineuropa”, Delfi.lv, the online critical magazine “Korydor” and “Scanorama”. Since 2018 the curator of an international film festival Kyiv Critic`s Week and a member of the Union of Ukrainian Film Critics. Taking part in French art history research institute Institute National d`Historie de l`Art activities in the field of film criticism. Programmer of retrospective "Slava Ukraїni!" at La Cinematheque Francaise. Since 2022 contributing to film programming for European Film Forum Scanorama. When Russia invaded Ukraine, Natalia spent five days in the besieged city of Sumy in the North-East of Ukraine, writing a diary instead of film reviews. First it was published on “Radio Liberty”/“Radio Free Europe” and later on “Screen Daily” – ‘I am a film critic under fire in Ukraine’.
Maksym Nakonechnyi received his degree in directing from Karpenko-Kary Kyiv National University of Theatre, Film and Television (2012). He has worked on various TV projects, theatre productions, commercials and social advertising and co-founded the independent production company “Tabor”. Filmography: debut feature “Butterfly Vision” (2022), documentary shorts “B – Yara”, “G – Nick”, “L – Nastya”, “T – Seb” (2020), fiction short “New Year with Family” (2018), fiction short “Invisible” (2017).
Alina Gorlova, a director and a producer. Born and raised in Ukraine, she graduated from Karpenko-Kary Kyiv National University of Theatre, Film and Television. Eight years ago, together with Maksym Nakonechnyi she co-founded the independent film production company “Tabor”. Her directed feature documentary “No Obvious Signs” (2018) won the MDR film award for best Eastern European film at DokLeipzig. Alina was a 2019 Berlinale Talents and Eurodoc 2020 participant. Her latest feature documentary “This Rain Will Never Stop” (2020) won the award for Best First Appearance at IDFA, the Best Feature awards at Festival dei Popoli, Beldocs, Go East, One World, Ice Docs and Las Palmas international film festivals.

As Maksym Nakonechnyi, the director of “Butterfly Vision”, couldn't leave Kyiv due to personal reasons, the film sound designer Vasyl Javtushenko will join the seminar to tell more about its sound decisions.
