Masterclass by Christina Tynkevich
The young Ukrainian director Christina Tynkevich will talk about her fiction feature debut “How is Katia?” (2022), which received a special jury prize “Filmmakers of the Present” at this year's Locarno International Film Festival and is presented at this year Scanorama’s film program.
“How is Katia?" centers on a mother dealing with the sudden death of her teenage daughter, connecting feelings of grief, guilt and revenge with the corruption in medical institutions and broken moral compasses of some society members. The director worked on the development of the script for three years, taking part in Midpoint and other development programs. It took about five years to release the film, which long takes seem to be affected by the Romanian New Wave.
Although the story about revenge and grief related to the death of a loved one is universal and can be told in any country, we aim to know more about the hidden issues particular society has, in this case, corruption, and learn about the challenges current Ukrainian filmmakers face to bring their work to screens and how the international community could help in circumstances when it is even difficult to fly them to the festival due to Ukraine’s current travel complications.

Christina Tynkevich, Film director from Ukraine. Christina grew up in Kyiv and studied film at the University of Arts and the University of Westminster in London. Her first short documentary “Kraina” (2015) was long-listed for the Academy Awards 2017. It was followed by the short “Solatium” (2016) and feature documentary “Generation 91” (2019), which showed the first post-Soviet generation of Ukrainians, born in 1990-92. Both films went on to screen at festivals in Europe and the US. Her debut feature “How Is Katia?” (2022) premiered at the Locarno Film Festival and received two awards. Currently Christina has been developing a script for her upcoming feature drama “Koshetz”. She is a member of the European Film Academy and the Ukrainian Film Academy. Before settling in her native Kyiv, lived and worked in London and Paris.
