Contemporary Screenwriting Masterclass by Gualberto Ferrari
Screenwriter, film director and script consultant Gualberto Ferrari invites current and aspiring film professionals to discuss new screenwriting trends, best practise and the specific of the Baltic region. Everyone knows a tip “show not tell”, aimed to turn a talky script into a fulfilling visual experience. But how to move from excessive dialogue to actions and emotions in practise? What differences should be made while writing for a contemporary short versus a feature film? Which structure should we follow today? Are we still talking about three act structure or five or currently popular seven act structure? Does it even matter? Gualberto will guide the audience by providing answers to questions “popping up” while writing a screenplay – be it your first or fifty first script. All to help you fight the writer’s block and fill in your blank page.
The masterclass will be followed by G. Ferrari’s individual script development consultations for film professionals. During public application in September – beginning of October projects 5 film projects were selected. Individual consultations are planned to be extended upcoming year.
Participant:
Gualberto Ferrari, screenwriter, film director and script consultant, internationally working for more than thirty years. In the 1980s and 90s, he co-wrote numerous feature film screenplays, including “Tango mío” (1986), “Hotel du paradis” (1986), “Diario para un cuento” (“Diary for a Tale”, 1998), directed by Jana Bokova. “Diario para un cuento”, a free adaptation of a short story by Julio Cortázar, was awarded by Best Adapted Screenplay at “Condor de Plata”, Argentina. During the same period, he co-wrote numerous TV reports and scripts for feature-length documentaries and docudramas for BBC TV. In recent years he directed various city portraits and series of contemporary artists for the TV channel “Paris Premiere” in France. His feature documentary film “Confessions” (“Confessiones”, 2011) was awarded by SCAM, French-speaking society for non fiction authors. From 2013 to 2017 he wrote and co-directed “Dechiffrage”, series of feature documentaries on global economy and social issues for ARTE and “Les Films d’ici” (France).
Since 2000 Gualberto has been working as a mentor and script adviser for fiction and documentary films for “Equinoxe” and “Produire en Sud” programmes in France as well as leading international workshops in Europe, South America and Asia. From 2012 to 2021 Gualberto worked for “Sources 2”, the European script lab. In 2016 was an adviser at the “Berlinale Talents Script Station”, in 2017 a script tuitor at “Buenos Aires Talents”, both years also led the new script development programme for “SPCINE” in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
In 2022 Gualberto is finishing the post-production for the feature-length documentary “Biu Alexandre, a Brazilian Tale”. Currently he is writing and developing the doc feature film “State of Mind” with development from the Swedish Film Institute and is also filming “The Healer and His Daughter” in the Amazonas during 2022 and 2023, the film being a Brazilian-Spanish co-production.
