10 hours live animation performance
This new 10 hours live animation performance will let the audience see the animator and performer Thomas Johnson Volda creating a stop motion animated video with his puppet. As the camera whirls around in a circle capturing this strange symbiotic interaction, the puppet discovers a string that connects him to his ‘master’ and begins to interact with the animator. But who is pulling whom along?
During the 10 hours, the creative process of stop motion animation will be exposed and the ongoing animated video will be displayed on the screen. The audience will witness how the animated character is brought to life and interacts with its animator ‘master’. The audience may enter and leave the performance at any time convenient.
Thomas Johnson Volda in 2007 gained a bachelor degree in time-based media from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff and in 2016 – a master degree at New Media and Animation Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. During his studies occupied with performance and painting disciplines, in 2010 Thomas focused on stop motion animation, started to work in collaboration with artist Ivana Bosnjak and moved to Croatia. Aside from making animated films (short films as well as TV commercials) as the model maker, animator and visual designer, Thomas creates stop motion performances which have been exhibited at a number of art galleries and animation film festivals. Currently Thomas and Ivana are in production of their third authored short animated film under the working title “Apathy”. Filmography: “Simulacra” (2014), “Imbued Life” (2019).
