Opening discussion of The Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania exhibition “Voices of Violence”
Additionally to the “Voices of Violence” video exhibition, the opening discussion will be setting focus on the complex interplay between art, female perspectives and women’s role in society, enabling a dialoge among Nordic and Lithuanian artists, activists and experts. In the discussion well-known female artists and activists whose works deal with issues of inequality, sexism or sexual violence and harassment will exchange and reflect upon their perspectives and experiences with representatives from women help centers and human rights organizations.
The United Nations specifically highlight the importance of eliminating all forms of violence, among this sexual violence, against women and girls. This is important also in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – and presumably in Belarus though no reliable statistics are available – where between 20 % (for Estonia) and 32 % (for Denmark and Latvia) of women aged 18-74 have been exposed to sexual or physical partner violence. These numbers go far to show that also in developed European countries, there is a strong need to focus on issues of sexism and sexual violence and to put forward stories of sexual harassment and abuse.
