Masterclass by Thomas Johnson Volda
During this masterclass, the animation film director and performance artist Thomas Johnson Volda will divulge his journey into the world of animation and performance art. From his formative experiments utilizing animation techniques at college, later discovering the radical possibilities of performance as a contemporary art technique at University in Wales, and into his creative practice today. During this masterclass Thomas will unpack and discuss his artworks and their development, their failings, successes and the allure to inspire him to create these strange and often disturbing performance animations.
Thomas’ co-written, co-directed and co-animated (together with Ivana Bosnjak) short puppet animation film “Imbued Life” (2019), showcasing young taxidermist returning animals to nature, has been travelling around the world on more than 100 film festivals, including Oberhausen, Krakow, Moscow International Film Festival, Annecy International Animation Festival, Balkanima, ANIMAGE, Animateca, PÖFF Shorts, dokumentART, Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival (nominated for Grand Prix) and received numerous awards.
Thomas Johnson Volda in 2007 gained a bachelor's degree in time-based media from the University of Wales Institute Cardi and in 2016 – a master's degree at New Media and Animation Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. During his studies occupied with performance and painting disciplines, in 2010 Thomas focused on stop motion animation, started to work in collaboration with artist Ivana Bosnjak and moved to Croatia. Aside from making animated films (short films as well as TV commercials) as the model maker, animator and visual designer, Thomas creates stop motion performances that have been exhibited at a number of art galleries and animation film festivals. Currently Thomas and Ivana are in production of their third authored short animated film under the working title “Apathy”. Filmography: “Simulacra” (2014), “Imbued Life” (2019).
